Consonant Blends & Digraphs — practise them by typing 🔊
Once a child can read cat, pig and sun, the next step in every school phonics programme is blends and digraphs — the letter teams in words like flag, stop and ship. TapaType's Blends game shows the letter team as one highlighted chunk, says the word aloud, and the child types it — so the blend is seen, heard and typed together.

The order schools teach them
Blends are introduced only after CVC words are solid — usually late in the first year of school — and the sequence is deliberate:
- L-blends and R-blends first (the most common): bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl · br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr
- S-blends and final blends (Year 1): st, sw, sn, sp, sk, sm · and word endings −st, −nd, −mp, −nk
- Digraphs and three-letter blends (Year 2): sh, ch, th, wh · str, spl, spr, scr

Two things the research is clear about
- Teach blending, not blends. The skill is pushing sounds together — so blends should always be practised inside real words, never drilled as isolated letter pairs. Every round in our game uses a real word with a picture.
- Don't rush. A child who has truly mastered a handful of blends picks up new ones faster than one who was raced through all of them. That's why the game keeps each level to a small, repeating set.
Questions parents ask
What is the difference between a blend and a digraph?
In a blend each consonant keeps its own sound (you hear /f/ and /r/ in frog). In a digraph two letters make one new sound (sh in ship is a single /sh/).
When do kids learn consonant blends?
Once they can confidently read CVC words like cat and pig — usually late in the first year of school, then building through Years 1–2.
Do blends need to be memorised?
No. Reading experts advise teaching blending rather than memorising letter pairs, and always practising them inside real words.
