What order should blends be taught in?

Start with high-frequency L-blends (bl, cl, fl, gl, pl, sl) and R-blends (br, cr, dr, fr, gr, pr, tr). Then s-blends (st, sw, sn, sp, sk, sm) and final blends (-st, -nd, -mp, -nk). Digraphs (sh, ch, th, wh) and three-letter blends (str, spl, spr, scr) come last.

Should blends be taught as letter pairs to memorise?

No — reading experts advise teaching blending rather than memorising blend pairs. Children should always practise blends inside real words, and it is better to master a small set thoroughly than to skim through many.

In a blend, each consonant keeps its own sound — in 'frog' you can hear both /f/ and /r/. In a digraph, two letters work together to make one brand new sound — the 'sh' in 'ship' is a single /sh/ sound, not /s/ + /h/.

Blend or digraph? The difference matters

Blend Each letter keeps its own sound. In frog you can hear both /f/ and /r/ — the sounds are squashed together but still there.

Digraph Two letters make one brand-new sound. The sh in ship is a single /sh/ — not /s/ then /h/.

The order schools teach them

Two things the research is clear about

Teach blending, not blends. The skill is pushing sounds together — so blends should always be practised inside real words, never drilled as isolated letter pairs. Every round in our game uses a real word with a picture.
Don't rush. A child who has truly mastered a handful of blends picks up new ones faster than one who was raced through all of them. That's why the game keeps each level to a small, repeating set.
